Gaming, as we all know, means playing games or a person who plays games. There are different types of games such as RPG (role-playing games), FPS (First-person shooter), TPS(Third-person shooter, online games which have a variety of sub-categories.
Nowadays, we are are all aware of the online world of gaming such as the most played games in the recent times are Fortnite which has a live player count of 5 to 6 million people playing it all over the world and the second is League of legends which has a live player count of 1.5 to 2 million people playing it all over the world. A list was prepared on a site called twinfinite about the most played games of 2020 and if you want to check out the live player count of games you can visit the player counter.
I am not here to talk about the gaming world, I just wanted to set a premise. I am here to talk about the psychological impact it creates on the human mind. The three things which I feel are important in human life and gaming affect these three are Emotional intelligence and/or the empathy of a person, life satisfaction, and the increased aggressive behaviour.
Life satisfaction is something we all want, there are certain researches that tell us, that an increased level of gaming can lead to gaming disorder (check out is Diagnostic and Statistical Manual 5 or DSM-5 criteria for Gaming Disorder) which will lead to decreased life satisfaction. But, I am not declaring such thing, I am just pointing out what the researches are saying because life satisfaction is subject to various things like for some people it’s making money, for some it is spending on expensive materialistic things, for some it is travelling or for some, it is spending quality time with family and many more. Over the years the gaming industry has given people a reason to game so that they can make their life worth living and feel satisfied with their lives. If you want to check out your satisfaction level you can visit this site.
Anger and Aggression
Anger or aggression is another issue in gaming. Now, the basic difference between anger and aggression is that anger is an emotion, that is, you feel angry and Aggression is the behaviour, that is, you act aggressively. It is there in every research that gaming leads to aggressive behaviour and you will find thousands of videos or compilation that show outrages due to gaming and it does not only happens in adults but children too.
Empathy and Emotional Intelligence
Empathy is the ability to feel what the other person is feeling. It is to experience their emotions. It is the ability to put yourself in the other person’s shoes in a big and meaningful way. Emotional intelligence is the ability to manage your own emotions, as well as the emotions of others.
In a research study, which was done on gamers on their emotional intelligence, found that individuals who have more negative perceptions of their emotion-related abilities and behaviours are more likely to be disordered online gamers (and gaming, therefore, has more negative effects on their lives). Individuals who have a higher ability to recognize, control, and regulate their feelings are more successful in their social relationships, in which these individuals would feel less need to escape from their reality than those who have lower trait EI. Therefore, high trait EI can be an important protective factor against IGD. Moreover, poor trait EI is also a risk factor for adolescent’s psychological control and behaviour problems including internalizing (e.g., anxious, withdrawn, somatic complaints) and externalizing (e.g., aggressive, rule-breaking) problem behaviours of which these behaviours can lead to higher IGD. If you want to test your IGD level you can visit this site for your evaluation.
There are many other factors that can be linked to gaming and its impact on the psychological well being of a person that hinders the daily lifestyle of a person, but I believe that we as human beings take our emotions for granted, we don’t consciously analyze our emotions so that we can understand our self better and people around us. We are in a time that is so money-driven, power-driven, and wants materialistic pleasures that we judge people without actually knowing the story. That’s where emotional Intelligence come and I believe that a person who may not be rich or doesn’t have luxury cars but is high on EI and have the understanding about his actions and its consequences is a far greater human being than a person who feels that “I” am important and no one else. Remember this, I know we came alone and will die alone, but, in this world, we will form connections, as we continue to live on this planet, to people around us and its called a relationship, it can be with our parents or with our friends or a romantic partner, then, you are not alone, you are not just “I”. You have people around you and you will have to understand them, their emotions, their thought patterns and if you don’t or don’t want to, you are another human being who is selfish and wants to go to heaven by making this place hell.
Another factor which I think is very important is Life satisfaction, I mean who doesn’t want to have a satisfying life. Who wants to be like this…
It’s hard to balance everything in life with so many relationships, and so many responsibilities which leads to frustration and aggressive behaviour. Everyone has their way of living life and has their own perception of life. We are a part of a world where we focus on being happy so much that we don’t try to understand sadness. When you will understand sadness then only you can understand true happiness. There is no such thing as good or bad, there is just perspective, for some that perspective can be good but for some, it can be bad. Sandness or being sad is not a bad thing its part of life, happy and sad are two sides of the same coin.
Gaming, according to researches all over the world, gives us a result that it creates a psychological impact on the human mind which leads to various problems such as low self-esteem, social anxiety, interpersonal contact, and many more.
Now, being a gamer I have noticed as well as experienced all of these things in my personality. Everyone wants that feeling of excitement, that adrenaline rush which looks something like this…
but you cannot deny the fact that it impacts your life. Apart from the negative side, there are some benefits to gaming, some of them are that it enhances your memory, problem-solving skills, improves your brains speed and many more. But ask yourself, is that all you want in life?
I am not saying that people should stop gaming. Games bring us into a different world so that we can forget the real-life drama for a while. In order to enjoy life with gaming in it, I only have one piece of advice, bring moderation. I won’t be talking about professional gamer or who want to be professional gamers because that will come under as their job. I am talking about the people who don’t want to be professional gamers and play games just for fun.
Think about it, analyze it and decide what’s best for you.
